The focus if academic and research programs  at the institute is an area related to the Fisheries Science, Aquaculture,   Environmental Science, Oceanography, Aquaculture nut ration and feed Technology, Coastal Zone Management  and sustainable exploitation of natural resources which is abundant in Bangladesh.

Students can opt to specialize in Aquatic biology, Marine botany, Ecology, Fish health management and Biodiversity and conservation: all of which have wide applications and offer numerous employment opportunities.  In research, the institute  has technological expertise and modern laboratory facilities to conduct various projects related to the management and prudent postgraduate programs (M.Sc , M.Phil & Ph.D) especially those which are research-based.
